This month we are happy to feature the Women’s Empowerment Club as our club of the month. As soon as I stepped in, the club members were more than welcoming, and even ecstatic to have me learn more about what they do. The club is led by Lana, Penelope, and Kaiya, three ambitious sophomores here at Roosevelt. The club is also advised and looked over by the beloved Tory Rodgers, the AP Language and Composition teacher. Every meeting they have discussions prepared for everyone to talk about within small groups, going as far to email articles to each of the members so they feel properly prepared and informed. I got a great opportunity to sit in on engaging conversations about women through history, with a main focus on the women activists. It was enlightening to listen to a handful of members speak about the women they thought were inspiring, powerful, and impactful. Penelope also gave me insight on one of their many goals as a club, including making sure the menstrual products in the bathrooms at Roosevelt are properly stocked on a consistent basis. They are in close contact with custodians to come up with solutions to the lack of replenishing of the period products, with some solutions including club members restocking the bathrooms themselves. When asked what they want people to know about the club, Kaiya shared that she wants people to know that they want the club to be a safe space where people can talk about anything, and that it’s not always a serious space. If any of this is of interest to you, which I wholly hope it does, then let it be known that the Women’s Empowerment Club meets every Wednesday in room 034 at lunch. Come on down and engage in beautifully articulated conversations, help the community, and meet some new people.
