This year’s winter sports season has been nothing short of eventful. The season has continued to bring our community together in support of Roosevelt’s student-athletes.
Our boys basketball team is looking at another great season after being PIL champions and taking 2nd place in the OSAA state championship last year. The team started preseason off strong heading to the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas December 18th followed by the Les Schwab invitational December 26th-30th. The house opener and first in-season game this year was against Roosevelt rivals, Jefferson High School. Roosevelt took the win beating Jefferson 92-45. They remain undefeated in league play, continuing to dominate with a display of strong leadership, disciplined defense, and unselfish offensive attack. The team chemistry is undeniable and every player has stepped up to contribute to their success. The teams winning mindset and relentless work ethic sets the stage for another exciting push towards a state championship.
Our girls basketball team is bouncing back this year showing remarkable growth each week. They started off their pre-season with the Nike Interstate Shootout Tournament where they battled Sandy, Milwaukee and Battle Ground High School winning all three games and going home tournament champs. The team is developing their identity, gaining confidence and improving in all facets of the game. Make sure to show up and show your support for our Lady Riders at their upcoming home game against Franklin on February 21st at 6:30 pm.
After Coach Wheeler stepped down this year, assistant coach Tim Lee stepped in as the new head coach of the swim team. They started their season off at Dishman Pool with a Varsity Boys and Girls PIL League meet against Franklin and Lincoln High School. Swim worked hard this year to recruit new swimmers, the athletes have consistently posted personal-best times, and their teamwork and determination have been on full display. The team’s competitive spirit is a testament to their hard work and dedication.Their commitment to conditioning and technique is paying off, and we’re excited to see what they accomplish at districts.
Girls and boys wrestling teams had their senior night on Wednesday, January 8th followed by a PIL League Meet with Ida B. Wells High School and McDaniel High School. They celebrated their nine graduating seniors.
