Our fall athletic season is in full swing, and this year’s sports at Roosevelt High School are off to a great start.
Our Football team continues to show growth and determination. They’re working hard with the potential for a strong finish and possibly a postseason appearance. They won their first game of the season on Thursday, October 10th against Jefferson High School. This was a big game for the Roosevelt community being against our rival school and was at capacity in the stands! We were not disappointed with the turn out. The homecoming game this year was Friday, October 4th against Lincoln where Roosevelt suffered a 0-3 defeat. The Riders are preparing for their next game against Grant at the Marshall Campus Friday, November 1st.
Providence Park hosted both our boys and girls soccer teams on Monday October 7th. This was an exciting event for both students and players who were able to watch and play in the stadium, under the lights. Boys Soccer, under new coach Felipe Ramis, who has set a high standard of excellence, is having a great season, with hopes of making a postseason run . They dominated this preseason, with five wins, one tie and two losses, which was an exciting start to what is expected to be an eventful season. Women’s soccer faced a setback this season after losing their coach right before the start of the season. But with new head coach, Hector Solis the team has made tremendous progress, competing at a high level every day. Their determination does not go unnoticed.
In Volleyball, first-year varsity coach Alexia Julian is leading the team with dedication. The players have been working diligently and battling each week. There is an exciting turn out of freshmen this season, and we are excited to see where they take the program in the future. Be ready to show up and show out in support of our Riders for their last few games of the season.
Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are racing in the Portland Interscholastic League Championships Wednesday, October 30th at Lents Park which will be followed by the OSAA 6A State Championships on Saturday, November 9th at Lane Community College. Everyone is encouraged to join cross country, no matter what skill level you are at or what time you run. It is a fun and tight-knit community.
Our Dance team hosted their first-ever Fall Festival on October 21st. They are blossoming more each season and their hard work shows. We are proud of the work that they have done to grow the program and create an ongoing team to represent our school.
Finally, our Cheer team brings incredible energy and spirit to every game. They will be starting a new tradition this year of cheering for both soccer and volleyball senior nights. We are grateful for their contribution to upholding our school spirit and their growing numbers are a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Our Roosevelt Athletic director, Willie Williams says “Overall, this fall season has been filled with growth, hard work, and a true sense of community within our teams. I’m thrilled to see improvement across all our programs.” We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season goes for our team as we approach the end and begin to head into our winter sports season.
