The Sewing Club is a unique club with its own way of running itself. On Thursday the 5th of December, my friend Ana and I attended this club from 3:50 pm to 5 pm and both of us had fun. My friend Ana has previous sewing experience, she herself owns a sewing machine and taught me a bit on how to set one up. Turns out her sewing machine is different then the ones at the club. The head of the club, Ms. Kim Castle helped us out on ideas for our first sewing project. We decided on making a mini bag to put items in, then we went to the back of the class and grabbed different cut up pieces of cloth. One of the assistants of the club came and gave us tips on how to make our bags look a little more “professional”. The sewing machine is complicated in a way, you really have to pay attention to how it operates to understand how to use it. The machine consists of the bobbin aka the thread of choice. You grab the bobbin and insert it in its spot which is located under the needle clamp machine. There’s a step by step on where to take the thread and how to insert it through the hole in the needle clamp and from there everything begins. On Thursday the 12th of December, I and Ana went to our 3rd session. The session was different, Ms Castle gave everybody the lil bookmark project. Ana and I were given instructions on how to make these bookmarks. The first step was choosing three colored cloths and cutting them into 4×4 inch squares, secondly we stitched one of the cloths into a taco shape so it can hold on to the corner of a page for a book. Thirdly we grabbed all three cloths and mashed them together, the taco stitched one in the middle and the other two outside of it. The cloths were inside out so when we stitched them the stitches wouldn’t show and only the color patterns would show by itself with no other piece catching your eyes. Honestly, joining the sewing club was a good decision I made, it helps me get a grasp on patience, something I kinda struggle on in my daily life. I got to work on my social skills because some of the staff that work in the main office of Roosevelt came to the sewing club to help out. A staff member I met there was Ms. Adriana, our vice principle gave me and Ana a tip on how to get the thread inside the needle to stitch our bookmark together. It was a helpful tip making both our hands have a mini role. We use our right arm to hold up the thread while we use our left one to aim the thread inside the hole. Overall the Sewing Club is a great and amazing club to start off on if you plan on joining a club. The staff are friendly and always have the best advice for a starter sewer. I myself am a starter but am satisfied with both projects I’ve done like my mini bag and a mini needle pouch to keep needles in. If you are interested in joining the club, come to the maker space, everybody is welcome and it doesn’t matter when you join. Ms.Castle is always happy to have more members join her club and she works with everybody, it doesn’t matter the skill level you are just as long as you’re respectful and mindful of the space and materials.
