Lorde’s album “Virgin”, is her fourth studio album. It was released on June 27th, 2025. Lorde has always been really creative with her music, with her audience being catered towards teenagers. This album feels different from the rest of her discography, more grown and adult. Her last albums have focused on adolescence and growing up, while this album focuses on more adult themes. It’s raw, emotional, and definitely a different approach than any of her other work. This album leans into quieter sounds, making the result feel personal and easier to relate to. Throughout the album she explores themes of growing up, identity, being in the public eye and the difficulties that come with that. This album feels very vulnerable and less “produced”. She has always been good at writing lyrics that are easy for everyone to find something to relate to, but in “Virgin”, she gets more niche with the subjects and themes of her songs. Rather than presenting herself as someone who has everything together, she focuses on moments of doubt, confusion and change, which makes the album feel real.
Musically, the album flows nicely, It’s soft, yet has Lorde’s touch to it. Instead of an intense production, her album feels minimalist. Her vocals are controlled, yet they still vary. The pacing of the album feels just right, while some songs are more intense and faster and others are slower and more relaxed. This gives it a nice balance, capturing a less repetitive album. Many of the songs share the same moods and themes, but she does it in a way where it’s not repetitive. Listening to the album start to finish feels like you’re experiencing a cinematic experience, from the start of the album with the first track “Hammer”, to the last track “David”.
The maturity in this album really shows throughout. While earlier in her career, she wrote about the teenage experience and life and the emotions that come with growing up. She shows how fame, and being in the “spotlight”, has shaped who she is as a person and how it reflects on her life. This album captures a certain part in her life that feels so vulnerable. Overall, “Virgin”is a good listen, and it’s a thoughtful album. It’s not like her other work that her fans might have expected from her, but many people find this album one of her bests. This album shows how talented and creative Lorde is and it shows throughout.
