Senior traditions are an important part of high school, and Roosevelt’s Leadership class is working extra hard to make them exciting for the entire class of 2026. With events like Senior Skip Day, a Senior Spirit Week, Senior Sunset, and a
bonfire, there will be a packed itinerary for all Roosevelt seniors!
Last week (May 18-22nd) was Seniors’ Spirit Week, with classic spirit days like decision day, and human yearbook. Human yearbook is when you wear a white shirt to school for everyone in the class to sign. There will be popsicles and sharpies to sign shirts with at lunch. Incorporating the spirit that we have not traditionally done at Roosevelt. We also had our Senior Skip Day during that week, and a beach day for all seniors! This year, we want to increase unity
within the class and make senior activities as accessible to everyone as they can be. Make sure to stay tuned with Roosevelt’s Senior Instagram account: (@lina.hazel_seniorreps), for more details and highlights from both of these events!
We are also going to have Senior Sunset, which is a modern tradition that started pretty recently as a counterpart to Senior Sunrise. It’s a way to bond one last time as a senior class before graduation and leads into a senior bonfire, a function for the entire senior class. It was popularized with social media as an addition to senior skip day, and often, there are games, photo opportunities, and just generally hanging out with friends from school. Last year, our seniors had a movie night watching Rio, which a 2025 senior said was “a great get together one last time with everyone.” This year, we were hoping to do a field day with events like badminton, spikeball, and other competitions (with some good prizes!).
I asked Roosevelt’s very own seniors what their favorite traditions were, and if they wanted to see anything new this year. Clearly, senioritis is kicking in as the majority of the responses I received cited senior skip day as the most anticipated senior event. One senior said, “My favorite senior tradition is chronically low attendance
and senior skip day because at this point I just like not going to school.” Of course not everyone is that desperate to leave and are more excited for the other festivities, “I am really excited to decorate my cap and gown and for senior sunset,” said Jasmin Reyes-Contreras.
These traditions are a way to bring the senior class together one more time before we all leave on our own paths. This year we have a record number of students going far away and scattering all across the country. These last activities together will be bittersweet but the whole Voices of Roosevelt staff is excited to see where everyone goes and watch everyone grow into the best versions of themselves!
