The spring season is winding down with only a few weeks left. Spring sports include baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and track and field. Roosevelt’s spring student athletes have grown in confidence, worked hard, and represented RHS with pride. Below are highlights from each program as our athletes continue to grow, compete, and represent Roosevelt with heart.
The season started strong for our Roosevelt track team with more than one hundred and fifty student athletes joining this season. Head Coach Jonquil Vann continues to anchor one of our largest and most competitive athletic programs which has been full of energy, growth, and new opportunities for athletes across all events. Several athletes have competed at state and national levels, showing the high ceiling and strong development happening within the program. Senior Aster Jones once again represented Roosevelt at the Oregon Relays, earning a double victory in the 100 meter and 200 meter. She now has eight Oregon Relays wins, along with a State Record and a Meet Record in the short medley relay, making her one of the most decorated athletes in the event’s history. As the state meet approaches in Eugene, the team is motivated, confident, and excited to finish strong.
It is bound to be a very exciting season for the Roosevelt softball team as they work to reclaim the PIL 1st place title. Head Coach Annaisabel Perez has continued to build a culture rooted in perseverance, learning, and pride. The
team has grown tremendously this season, showing grit in every inning and supporting one another through the challenges of a competitive schedule. A major highlight of this season was their successful youth night with North
Portland Little League, which brought great energy and community connection to the field. They have both a JV and Varsity team with a stacked lineup, showing growth in the program as a whole. As the season winds down, the
team is playing with confidence and a sense of urgency to prove that they remain as one of the stronger programs in the PIL. Senior Night took place on May 18th against Franklin, where we honored seniors Taylor Wisner, Gigi Thurston, and Ashley Barnard.
This season we’ve seen a lot of growth in the baseball program. Coach Stauffer says “We haven’t always gotten
the results we want, but good things are happening and I believe we are going to turn some heads when we begin
league play next week!” Oliver Immel has been a great leader and teammate this season. He always gives full
effort as a pitcher, hitter, fielder and base runner and is a major source of positive energy in the dugout for his
teammates. Head Coach Daniel Stauffer has guided the baseball program through a season filled with growth and
momentum. The team has continued to build confidence with each game, leaning on strong senior leadership and emerging younger talent. Most recently, beating our rival Jefferson both at home and away. Ezra Arp threw several
quality innings, and Milo Salomone delivered one of the most exciting plays of the season with an inside the park
home run. As the team heads into the final stretch, their chemistry, effort, and steady improvement have been
clear. Senior Night was on May 21 against McKay High School, where we honored Cason Gilkey, Mitch Geiger,
Luis Rodriguez, Milo Salomone, and Jamari Hopkins.
Head Coach Kathleen Sullivan continues to lead a thriving girls tennis program. With more than 35 students
trying out this year, the interest and excitement around the program have never been higher. The team has shown
exceptional growth, improving their skills while building a supportive and fun environment. They were undefeated in non league play and continue to compete with confidence as they enter league and postseason matches. Their strong teamwork and positive energy makes the future of the program very bright.
Under new Head Coach Joshua Toole, the boys tennis team has taken a big step forward. The program has expanded its roster, strengthened player development, and built a team culture centered on hard work and mutual support. The boys have been more competitive this year and continue to grow in both singles and doubles play. Their improvement has been noticeable week after week, and they carry a lot of optimism into the postseason.
New Head Coach Sung Baek has brought steady guidance to the boys golf team, while returning Head Coach Kathryn Britton continues to support growth on the girls team. Both teams have shown impressive development, with athletes demonstrating more consistent play and stronger course management throughout the year. Practicing at Heron Lakes has given golfers the chance to learn, improve, and challenge themselves on a daily basis. We are proud to send Melissa Cortez to regionals. Melissa is the first Rider golfer to qualify in several years, and she has set a great example for younger golfers in the
program.
Last but not least, Roosevelt’s new Vice Principal of Athletics and Athletic Director, Kevin Locascio started
his role in February and has already had a notable impact on Roosevelt’s athletics. Kevin grew up in Federal Way
Washington, and has been in PPS for four years. Before stepping into this role, he worked as a New Teacher Men-
tor in the District Office and before joining PPS, he taught middle and high school math and coached basketball for
five years in the Seattle, Washington area. Kevin says “My favorite part about Roosevelt so far is the strong sense
of pride and community support that makes this school such a special place.”
