On Tuesday, November 4th, the Voices Team attended Oregon’s annual OJEA conference at the University of Oregon. We headed down to Eugene along with the Roosevelt Yearbook staff at 6 AM, eager to learn more about journalism! This year, our staff gained 18 new members, making this year most of our team’s first experience at the OJEA conference.
During the day-long conference, we attended a variety of workshops and sessions on photography, sports news, opinion writing, and more. University of Oregon Media Day is always a great experience and an amazing opportunity to learn and make new connections. University of Oregon is a great location for the event considering the renowned school of Journalism (SOJC) and beautiful learning spaces.
UO Media Day always ends with an awards ceremony in the EMU Ballroom, recognizing students and schools for their outstanding writing and photography. Both Publications and Yearbook entered Roosevelt into numerous competitions against other Oregon high schools. Roosevelt Yearbook students Luxe Aasen, Natalie Eisenman, Sam Simmons, and D’Angelo Strong won Best in Show in the Social Media Coverage category. This year was Voices of Roosevelt’s third time attending Fall Media Day and first ever award. Our October printed issue won us First Runner-Up in the Large School Newspaper category! The team was beyond proud as everyone put so much effort and care into this issue. We hope to continue to grow, take our paper to the next level, and of course attend many more OJEA conferences.
Best sure to pick up our latest issue of Voices of Roosevelt from our newspaper box in the RHS Commons and the front office of the school.
