Our final season of this year’s Roosevelt sports is in play and the growth and progress of our student athletes is visible. As the weather warms up, our teams are heating up the competition and showcasing skill, growth, and serious determination.
This year’s track team is as big as ever and our athletes are demonstrating standout performances this season in all events. The addition of new coaches has brought fresh energy and confidence, and the team has fully embraced the belief that they belong among the best. Several student athletes have competed at prestigious state and national invitationals, with some even securing top 1st and 2nd place finishes.
Some honorable mentions this season are Aster Jones, taking the win in the 100m at the Oregon Relays and Kelly Jean for setting a new school record of under 11 seconds in the 100 meters. With eyes on the State meet at Hayward Field in Eugene in May, momentum is building for a thrilling finish.
The softball team is making a comeback this season under the leadership of their new head coach, Annaisabel Perez. They are back with a JV team this year after having just a varsity team last season which is a huge milestone in developing a strong pipeline for the
future. The energy and enthusiasm they bring to games is contagious and the team chemistry is stronger than ever. Their hard work is translating into solid performances on the field and they’re making big strides towards playoffs this year, following the legacy of their PIL championship in 2023.
The baseball team traveled to Arizona over spring break this year where they played several competitive games and built even stronger bonds both on and off the field. The team is learning and growing in skill each day with a great mix of experienced seniors and rising underclassmen stepping up in both practices and games. They’re putting in the work with confidence and grit and as the season heads into its final stretch, the team is focused and fired up to finish strong.
The girls tennis team is thriving this season with a growing roster of new and returning, enthusiastic players. The team has come together to improve their skills, support each other, and enjoy the journey with the guidance of new coaches Coach Kathleen Sullivan and Coach Timora Konigwilcox. One player says, “These coaches are such amazing and kindhearted people. They have a lot of tennis knowledge and experiences that they enjoy sharing with the team. They have so much patience and respect towards us everyday. We have learned so much from them both.” Confidence on the court is growing with every match with players supporting and encouraging each other, team spirit is at an all-time high. The future of this program is looking bright.
The boys tennis team is making steady progress this season, with student athletes showing noticeable improvement in both singles and doubles play. The team has a strong work ethic as well as a positive attitude that contributes to the competitive yet fun environment that they have created. The players are gaining valuable experience and building momentum for the seasons ahead with several close matches under their belt their effort and dedication is sure to be on display.
Boys and Girls Golf teams are quietly putting in work and seeing great results with student athletes improving their scores and course strategy throughout the season. The participation from new players has been a huge addition to the program and whether they’re competing or practicing, both teams have built a supportive
and respectful culture that’s helping them grow as players and teammates. They continue to demonstrate focus and consistency and we look forward to seeing where it takes them as this season wraps up.
And lastly, a message from Roosevelt’s Athletic Director Willie Williams, “As spring sports head into their final weeks, it’s clear that Roosevelt’s student athletes are pushing boundaries and making us proud. Go Riders!”
